Privacy Policy

Short version

GrayCat Markdown is a local and iCloud document writing tool. It does not require a GrayCat account, include advertising or tracking SDKs, or upload documents to a developer-operated server.

The optional AI writing assistant can run on device when supported. Before document content is sent to cloud AI, the app shows the text scope for confirmation. Depending on that confirmed scope, it sends either selected text or the entire Markdown text of the current document directly from your device to the third-party AI provider you configure with your own API key. No document content is sent automatically.

Documents and iCloud

Markdown documents, image assets, and related files are stored in the local folder or iCloud Documents location you choose. When iCloud Documents sync is enabled, files sync through your own Apple iCloud account. The developer cannot access their contents.

AI writing assistant

The assistant can work on a selection or the entire current document. Document-level commands such as full-document summary, translation, outline generation, and title suggestions always use the full current document. Other actions may also use the full document when no selection is present or when you choose Full Text. A pre-run confirmation shows the scope and previews the input before anything is processed or sent.

On-device AI

When supported by your device and operating system, the confirmed scope may be processed locally using Apple on-device models. On-device AI does not send that text to a cloud AI provider.

Cloud AI with your own API key

You may configure a third-party AI provider, model, HTTPS endpoint, and your own API key. A cloud AI operation that includes document content runs only after you review the confirmation and explicitly press Start.

When you explicitly use Test Connection, the app sends a fixed diagnostic prompt and the API key needed for authentication to the current provider; the diagnostic request does not include document content. When you explicitly refresh available models, the app uses the API key to request that provider's model catalog; this request also contains no document content.

A request may include:

• The confirmed text scope: selected text or the entire current Markdown document. Full-document scope includes Markdown formatting and any front matter.
• The selected AI action or custom instruction.
• A system prompt needed for the Markdown editing task.
• Related local Markdown check results, when you run such an action.
• The model name and API key required by the provider for authentication.

The app does not send other documents, folder lists, or image assets, and sends no document content before you explicitly start document processing.

API keys

Cloud AI keys are stored in the system Keychain and separated by provider or custom endpoint. They are not written to UserDefaults, logs, or iCloud-synced storage. You can remove a saved key in AI Settings.

No developer collection of AI content

GrayCat Markdown does not operate an AI proxy server. Requests go directly from your device to the provider you configure. The developer does not receive, log, store, or view your AI input, output, documents, or API key through this feature.

Third-party providers may process, log, retain, review, or use request content according to your account, API, and privacy terms with that provider. Review those policies before use.

User control

Before the first cloud AI operation that includes document content, the app asks for permission to send the confirmed scope to the configured provider. Changing provider or custom endpoint requires confirmation again. Every document-content cloud operation shows Selection or Full Text scope and an input preview. You may disable cloud permission or delete saved keys at any time.

Sensitive content notice

Avoid sending personal, medical, financial, legal, confidential business, legally protected, customer, child-related, or other high-risk text to third-party cloud AI providers. AI output may be inaccurate and should be reviewed before saving, publishing, or relying on it.
