System requirements

GrayCat PDF is made for macOS 14 or later and supports English and Simplified Chinese. Apple on-device translation requires macOS 15 or later.

Common questions

Does translation need the internet?

Apple system translation processes text on device; macOS may need to download language assets the first time a language is used. Hosted AI providers need internet access and normally your own API key. A local service you run, such as Ollama, works without internet access and normally needs no key.

Where is my API key stored?

Only in this Mac's system Keychain. For a request, the key is sent in the authentication header only to the provider and endpoint you configured. You can clear it at any time in Settings.

Where is translation progress stored?

Progress is kept in *.graycat-translation.json next to the source file, or in Application Support, and can be deleted in Settings → Privacy. Password-protected PDFs do not create this plaintext progress file.

Which AI providers are supported?

DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), Kimi, Qwen, GLM, SiliconFlow, local Ollama, and OpenAI-compatible endpoints.

When reporting a problem, include

• Your Mac model and macOS version
• The GrayCat PDF version and build number
• Steps that reproduce the problem, the expected result, and what happened instead
• A screenshot or minimal sample file without private content, when relevant
